We determine our happiness

“Happiness doesn’t depend on any external conditions; it is governed by our mental attitude.”

Happiness is a decision; it is not based on what’s going on around us. It’s based solely on what’s going on inside of us. Our happiness is based on the thoughts that we choose to give our attention to; the thoughts that we choose to harbor. Dale Carnegie said, “It isn’t what you have, or who you are, or where you are, or what you are doing that makes you happy or unhappy. It is what you think about.”

  1. No fucking shit, sherlock.

But you cannot learn to think differently/new things without observation.

And if you observe negative things. Then therefore you will learn negative things.

This is a very UNREALISTIC outlook, Mr. Carnegie.

    • Typical response of a person who has a weak mind unable of exploring a concept that is new to them, quickly shutting it down claiming it to be unrealistic. If your stubbornness allowed you to give yourself a moment to realistically evaluate this concept you might find yourself capable of find some happiness in your shitty life. It is quite apparent that your life is pretty shitty for you to comment on an inspirational quote claiming it not to be true, as if you have some sort of scholarly prowess. I’m sure your life isn’t that terrible that you should be this full of negative feelings. But maybe it is…

  2. I think john fckin olson is hilarious. How much do you bet he just got up today looking for something happy like this to bitch about and shoot down? He sounds like a tad bit of an artard.

  3. You aren’t necessarily learning as you’re observing. If you have a brain, you’ll be able to sort the negative observations out and use your positive observations to support your happiness. Happiness certainly is as Carnegie says it is, a choice.

  4. the thing about the brain is that is stores new information with old memories, so it only ever gives us an approximate view of reality. although i agree with trying to focus on positive thought, the truth is its not feasible to do every moment in this poisoned world.

    • What ever you look for in this life you are bound to find. The reason being is that it is all here. Happy, sad, good, bad, funny, dumb, but we choose what to let into our minds. Happiness is a state of mind and one can be happy all the time. Worrying about the past or future only steals from this moments perfection. You can be happy for a friend who just got married or for a loved one that has passed on and is no longer in pain. If you yourself are in pain and slow down to think about the amazement in life you can still be happy and rid the pain from your mind. The here-after is of course now. Because there is nowhere else than now. If you want to make heaven of it you can & if you want to make hell of it you can. It’s all here, always was always will be. How would you know your alive if you had not once been dead.

  5. I love this.
    very true.
because simplistically, depression is just a bunch of negative thoughts in your mind (cerebral cortex) which then tells your limbic system and your primitive brain.
    i love it.
    thank you for posting

    • “depression is just a bunch of negative thoughts…?” what an un-informed asshole. a bunch of negative thoughts is a bad day; depression is a chronic inability to function on a daily basis. depression is a recognized, chemically treatable disease. negative thoughts can make you cry. depression can make you commit suicide. maddy is just another banal example of a pollyanna, pull yourself up by your bootsraps mentality.

  6. Happiness comes from within. No external source can make you unhappy if you do not will it. Of course when we see negative things going in the world our initial reaction is to think negatively about the situation, but the key is to learn from the negative things that go on around us and strive for change. You must view the world in a compassionate manner rather than with hatred. Life is too short to harbor negative energy. Good things can come from negative situations if we’re but willing to take action. Change in the world starts from within. How can a person with a negative attitude all the time ever hope to view the world positively?

  7. Although I agree that negative thoughts can be filtered out, I only think that’s true to only an extent. if you have nothing but negativity in your environment then chances are you can’t just “choose to be happy”. if you are coming home and getting hit by your dad, or if your mom is an alcoholic, etc., then perhaps this quote doesn’t exactly apply. but as you get older and deal with the demons from your past, you can strive to be happier. so environment is key.

  8. I was taught that happiness is entirely based upon your perception of a certain situation, which is basically reiterating what Mr. Carnagie stated up above. But one cannot totally disregard some of the science related with emotions. I am not a student of biology and I have a very small understanding of how the brain works but I do know that in various situations the brain releases chemicals to help comprehend the situation. Eg Adrenaline – fight or flight or Dopamine (unsure of the spelling) the chemical related to depression (again, I could be wrong) but thank you for te opportunity to post my thoughts 🙂

  9. Well! I fully agree: happiness is a choice in my opinion! But if you choose the option “no way, happiness isn’t a choice”, then there you go: this is also a choice! See, what I mean? Well, for those denying the fact that we can ourselves kind of “shape” our own reality: have you ever tried for a longer period of time to feed good thoughts and act optimistic? Please bear in your mind that the results are delayed, so you feed your thoughts and feelings with good vibes, you could harvest happiness sooner or later. Give a try!! ;o)
